The world of work is changing

Talking to a recruitment manager at a networking event this morning, I heard that younger people have different requirements from their employment these days. Money isn’t the most important factor; social and environmental responsibility take priority these days, and they want to have a role that makes a measurable difference either within the company or for the customers. They’re also unlikely to want to do the same role for more than a couple of years.

As I moved through the crowd and had the chance to talk to some of these young people I found that this indeed was the case. I asked if these kind of roles were widely available in the employment landscape today and the answer was a resounding ‘no!’ There’s a lesson to be learned there for all of us. The world of work needs to change.

On the other hand I was surprised to find that they’re also a bit tired of working from home all the time. People are realising there is energy to be gained from a return to the office or hot-desking space. The segregation of work/life is probably going to become more important to them than it ever was for the older generation - but they’re going to demand the flexibility of working from home when they want to.
